Name: Jonathan Baine Jonas. My middle name is the same as my dad’s.
About me: My wife Suzanne and I are natives of Abingdon, Virginia, and our children are Grace, Brett, Micah, Sage and Josie. I’m an alumnus of Emory & Henry College and Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
What I like to do for fun and relaxation: I’m very interested in and fascinated by United States history, so I read a lot of history books. I love football and am very devoted to my Emory & Henry Wasps and Atlanta Falcons. Because of my children’s ages, their hobbies become my hobbies, and I enjoy all of their activities.
Favorite food: Pizza, beyond any shadow of doubt.
Favorite music: I enjoy a great variety, but I mostly listen to Christian contemporary. My children are glad that I listen to pop music with them, but they wish that I didn’t enjoy bluegrass so much.
Favorite vacation spot: Holden Beach, North Carolina.
Biblical character I most identify with: Simon Peter. Like him, I’m stubborn and willful, and I often open my mouth before fully engaging my brain. I would love to tell Jesus that I would never deny him, even if everyone else does, but I know better.
Favorite Bible verse: May I choose two consecutive verses? Ephesians 2:8-9. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast.”
What I like best about State Street UMC: I am so proud of this community’s servant ministry to the community in Jesus’ name. Ministries like FISH Club, Bristol Faith in Action, Family Promise, and Recovery are wonderful ways of rising to Jesus’ challenge in Matthew 25.
