Name: Helene Denny, Director of Children’s Ministries
About me: I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1983 with B.S. in Conservation and Resources Development, Fish and Wildlife Option. I have worked with children of all ages for 35 years as a naturalist, children’s librarian, special education aide, and children’s ministries director. I have been married to Mark Denny, the love of my life, for 24 years. We met in Maryland when we both worked for the Montgomery County park system. Our son, George, is currently attending The College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, VA, where he is double-majoring in Physics and Geology. Our family has lived in Bristol VA for 18 wonderful years now.
What I like to do for fun and relaxation: I like to hike, bike, camp (real camping in a tent, with no electricity), swim, read a book, and cross stitch. I like to pet my 2 cats and 1 dog when I’m stressed…nothing like a purr or a lick to calm me right down.
My favorite food: Thai is my very favorite cuisine, but I also love Greek, Mexican and Indian. Anything cultural…I love trying food from different regions of the world.
My favorite music: I have eclectic musical tastes – Rock and Roll (it’s called Classic Rock now)/Americana/Bluegrass/Classical/Christian. I enjoy the Rhythm and Roots Festival immensely, and have attended with my family every single year since it first started.
My favorite vacation spots: Chincoteague, Virginia (wild ponies!); San Diego, California; Cozumel, Mexico. I would love to travel to Europe, someday.
The Bible character I most identify with: Jesus – I love having the children gather around me. I truly enjoy spending time with them, listening to them and discovering life truths together.
My favorite Bible verse: Psalms 118:24 “This is the day that the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
What I like best about State Street UMC: I like that we offer something for everyone, both in the types of services and the bible studies. I also love the staff and congregation members here – everyone is so supportive and kind.
